Sam Remington

First person survey for: Sam Remington

Name Given at Birth: Samuel James Remington

Nicknames: Sam (usually from Percival...Roslyn always calls me Samuel)

Hometown or where you were born: I was born in Enfield, which is just north of London.

Current Residence: London

Age: 28

Class: Upper middle class

Are you dead or alive? Very much alive, thank you

If dead, how did you die or how were you sired?

Short term goal: Rescue the girl, kill the vampires (not necessarily in that order)

Long term goal: I plan to hunt down and destroy as many blood sucking spawns of the Devil as I can possibly find. As long as I draw breath, no vampire is safe.

What do you do, your main function in life/society? Before I began my current crusade to rid the world of these creatures, I had just graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Criminology. I was investigating my second case. A prostitute named Beatrice had gone missing...some family members who looked after her child called the police after she didn't turn up for several days. The reason I was called in was because of the Ripper connection. The police wanted to know if this was another of Jack's victims or if this was simply another random crime from the dirty underbelly of London. After speaking with some of the girls on the streets where Beatrice worked, I found that she'd been meeting with someone unfamiliar to the other...ladies. One of the girls remembered hearing the name Victoria Sanguine...she said she recalled it because it was "unusual and exotic-like". After doing some research, I discovered that Madam Sanguine's name was on the deed to a crumbling old estate just outside London. The next day, I journeyed to the estate only to find it apparently abandoned and in very poor condition. Little did I know that even by the light of day, I had been observed by one of the Madam's slaves. Remember, at this time I had no idea of the true nature of these creatures. You see, they are evil, pure and simple. They could have taken out their anger at being discovered on the one who did the discovering. Instead, they tracked me home and decided to vent their rage upon the one person whose life I valued more highly than my own...my beloved fiance, Emily. They killed her while I was at the library. When I returned home, I found her broken and drained body lying on my couch. Only one of the vampires was left behind to let me know exactly who was responsible & why this ungodly action had been taken. I assume they thought that a single vampire (who went by the name Millicent, of all things) would be more than a match for a single grief-stricken human. I killed her without really knowing what I was doing...upon hearing her speak of this atrocity they had committed, I flung myself at her, pushing her back into into a glass-fronted curio cabinet. The glass shattered, and a huge shard stabbed into the creature's back, piercing her black heart. I know now it was only the dumbest of luck that I survived the encounter, let alone managed to kill the thing that called itself Millicent. After learning the full truth, I fled London, both to hide myself from the Madam's coven and to seek out the foremost expert on Vampirism, an interesting gentleman by the name of Van Helsing. For the past six months, I have studied under him and learned the ways of these dark & sinister creatures. I now return to London to avenge the death of my Emily by destroying the Madam and all her brood.

Have you ever taken a life? I once shot a man as a graduate student helping one of my professors investigate a homicide. The man was a criminal and would have shot us, had he had better aim, so I feel no remorse for this. I have also killed the vampire known as Millicent, but this doesn't count as taking a life...one must have life in order for it to be taken.

Have you ever committed or been convicted of a crime? Never...On the contrary, I had planned on devoting my life to hunting down criminals.

Closest friends/How did you meet? I have only two truly close friends. The first is the ever reliable Percival Watts III. Percy and I go back several years...he was the brother of my darling Emily. He was a fellow student at Oxford and was a prominent member of our boxing team. Upon Emily's death, I confessed everything to him in regard to the vampires. He has been like a solid rock for me to cling to when my life has so recently become a raging river of grief, fear and anger. Instead of calling me mad, he has never once doubted what I told him of the events surrounding his sister's death. He has instead expressed nothing but the keenest interest in assisting to avenge her murder.

I have known Ms. Roslynn DeLaine for nearly as long as I've known Percy. While pursuing my Criminology degree, I had to take many of the same courses as a law enforcement officer. Roslynn's father was a police commissioner and taught several of my classes, including nearly all of my self-defense & weapons courses. I feel an especially close bond with Ros because of a mutual loss; her father was murdered shortly before I lost my Emily. Ros is the only female besides Emily in whom I feel I can confide. Even though she believes nothing of what I've told her of vampires, I find myself relying upon her own skills as an investigator more and more often.

Pets: I have none. My life is far too busy to spend the time one should.

Favorite food: I am a huge fan of fish and chips, especially from a small pub by the name of Langley's just down the street from my flat.

Favorite place to relax: In a huge, overstuffed and slightly musty old chair near my bookshelves, curled up with a good read.

Favorite Drink: For recreational purposes, I generally prefer Scotch. I must however mention that I am absolutely addicted to coffee.

What's your bedtime? That varies greatly. When I was working cases, I would often stay up doing research until the wee hours of the morning, sometimes even falling asleep with my nose firmly buried in some dusty old tome. Now that I've taken on my new line of work, the difference between day and night has taken on a whole new meaning.

What, if anything, do you usually wear on your feet? Leather boots. Nothing fancy, but serviceable.

Are you married or single? Thanks to the Madam & her harlots, I am unfortunately single.

Do you have a family / who are they: My mother died when I was a child and I have not spoken with my father since he took up with his latest in a string of wives. Percy and Ros are truly the closest I have to family.

Favorite Entertainment: I do enjoy attending the theatre, but I find I hardly ever have the time to do so. And recently, of course, my life has become more of a drama than anything I would care to see performed on stage.

Most Humiliating Moment: There was a bit of an awkward moment when first I was introduced to Roslynn, but a gentleman does not reveal such things.

Proudest Moment: The day Emily said she wanted to spend the rest of her life with me.

What do you look for in the opposite sex? Of course the physical side of things is important, but I look for intelligent, independent women who are not afraid of speaking their mind. A rare thing, in this day and age!

In our Hierarchical Society everybody has somebody "over" them, who is your immediate "overlord"? Since I have begun my quest to destroy these blood-drinking monsters, I really answer to no one. I do, of course value the advice of my trusted friends Percy and Ros, as well as my new mentor, Van Helsing.

How do you feel about that person? I love Percy and Ros with all of my heart and trust them explicitly. I have great respect for Van Helsing, but love and trust will never enter into that relationship.

Favorite sport to watch: I love a good boxing match. Emily, Ros and I would often go watch Percy in the ring.

Do you remember your first kiss? Oh, do I ever! I was only 7 or 8 and her name was Sarah. Her father caught us, told my father & I received a beating I still remember to this day. I don't know whatever became of Sarah...

Do you keep in touch with your childhood friends? No...my childhood was not a pleasant time & I do not wish any reminders of it.

Do you have dirt/mud floors or stone? Hardwood flooring (which I take horrible care of) and some nice, though slightly dusty Oriental rugs.

What is your bed made of? A simple wooden frame with a beautiful antique headboard I found in a junk shop.

How many people sleep in your bed? Alas, only myself.

10 Things Everybody Should Know About Me:

-I now have a near obsession with ridding the world of vampires.

-I still am not truly over the loss of my beloved Emily.

-I worry greatly for Percy & Ros...I have asked them not to become involved in my current quest, but they, being the truly wonderful people they are, will hear nothing of the sort.

-I am skilled in both hand-to-hand combat & many different types of weaponry, thanks to my association with Commissioner DeLaine & Van Helsing.

-I am responsible for the destruction of the vampire Millicent, one of the Madam's harlots.

-At times, I feel guilty about how much I enjoy Roslynn's company...almost like it's a betrayal of Emily.

-I feel a sort of brotherly protectiveness for Percival, though he's perfectly capable of taking care of himself...he's my last link to Emily.

-I'm incredibly nervous about attempting to take on such a large nest of vampires...I only hope the skills I've acquired from Van Helsing are up to the task.

-Since Emily's death, I've taken to wearing dark colors almost exclusively.

-I'm still not sure how I feel about the vampires' human slaves...my instict is to try to free them but I don't know if they can be trusted, or even if they wish to be freed.
