Character Notes:

  • We are trying to create a plausible historical event.
  • Most people (even royalty) would work from dusk to dawn.
  • Everyone worked - you had to to put by food for the winter.
  • People believed they were were they were supposed to be. It was ordained by God and we were content to be who we were.
  • We are Anglicans.
  • Our family is the important part of our life.
Husband is the head of the household and absolute master of the house.
Wife is the caretaker and runs the house.
    The oldest son inherits everything.
The second son would either go to the church or the military.
Daughters would marry as well as their father could arrange for them and then have sons.
  • Everyone is dependent on an overlord.
  • A bathroom is called a privy.  Most homes had a chamberpot for calls of nature. It is emptied out the window into the middle of the street.
  • Life in Elizabethan England would have been odiferous to say the least.
  • Canterbury is landlocked.
  • Floors would be dirt or clay. Only the well to do would have stone or wood floors.
  • The upper class can read and write. There was really no need for anyone else to read.  Anyone of the lower classes that want to read and write must be able to prove why it's important for them to read and write.
  • Very few people would ever have enough to eat. It's only during the Harvest Festival that you would get enough to eat.
  • Everyone is at the Harvest Festival to have fun, even those that are there to do business.
  • Your wealth lies on your feet. You wear the best shoes your able.
  • The thing you would notice the most about renaissance England would be the smell!
  • Language is a high art.
  • Compendium of Common Knowledge - excellent resource to learn more about life in Elizabethan England.
