Dance Step Terminology

Single Takes 2 beats of music and consists of 1 step on the indicated foot in the indicated direction, completed by a close of the opposite foot. Single Left = step with the Left foot, close with the Right foot. When no direction is indicated, assume it is a step forward.

Double Takes 4 beats of music and consists of 3 steps beginning on the indicated foot in the indicated direction, completed by a close of the opposite foot. The close could be a hitch or a raised and falling ankle step. Double Left = step with the Left foot, step with the Right foot, step with the Left foot, close with the Right foot. When no direction is indicated, assume it is a step forward.

Pavane Takes 8 beats of music and consists of 2 Singles and 1 Double. The 2 Singles alternate feet and the Double starts with the same foot as the 1st Single. Pavane set Left = Single Left, Single Right, Double Left.

Turn Raise the arm of the indicated direction to turn, and follow that arm around in a complete circle.

Siding Is typically a Double forward on the indicated foot, passing your partner by the indicated shoulder, completed by a hitch. Then a Double backwards beginning on the opposite foot and completed by a close.

Arming Cup your indicated hand under the indicated elbow of your partner and walk in a complete circle, the opposite hand should be lifted to the level of the top of your head.

Branle (Pronounced BRAWL) partners have inside hands joined, take a step in the indicated direction and stretch outside arm, hand should be lifted to the level of the top of your head.

Cold Shoulder When in a line of dance facing your partner, the cold shoulder is the one that does not have a person next to it.

Carolingian Pavane

Danced in a circle.

During intro Men walk into the circle facing their partner and all reverence, then all face counterclockwise.

Left (up the hall) and look back to the right

1-8 Women (looking to the right) paw the ground twice, step to the right, turn

Repeat dance several times until back with the original partner or music ends

1-8 Top couple casts off and dances around the set to the bottom, then moves

through the bottom couple to home, then reverence on the 8th beat

1-4 Top man and Bottom woman cross using Cold Shoulders and reverence

1-4 Top woman and Bottom man cross using Cold Shoulders and reverence

1-8 All join hands and circle Left halfway until Top couple is home, then Top

couple drops hands with each other (don’t let go of the other couple).

Top couple spins away pulling the Bottom couple forward to the Top couple position, all 4 then spin away from partner and reverence on the 8th beat.
