Queen Elizabeth – Strong, take charge yet she is still fun, flirty and
majestic.
Le Roi d’France – He’s a consummate gentleman. Younger than Elizabeth.
Lord Robert Dudley – Quick tempered and very much the queen’s lover.
Lady Lettice Knollys – Fun flirty, lust for life, loves the joust.
Sir William of Whitehall – Her Majesty’s Champion.
Sir John Westmoreland – Queen’s Personal Guard.
Lord Mayor – Jolly fellow loves his wife.
Lady Mayor – Consummate hostess. Fun loving, scattered & a bit vain.
Queen’s Ladies
Elizabeth Throckmorton – Serious lady of the court, loves Francis Drake.
Cat Ashley – Enjoys being a lady to the Queen, loves pretty baubles.
Margaret Radcliffe – More serious, but always ready for an adventure.
Queen’s Gentlemen
Sir Walter Raleigh – Enjoys a good fight, has a thirst for adventure.
Sir Francis Drake – Hard drinking, ready to defend the Queen’s honor.
Sir John Hawkins – Always ready for a scrape, devoted to the Queen.
French Court (all of these men will be played by women)
Jean Paul, Comte d’Orleans – Serious, doesn’t agree with Le Roi’s plan.
Francois – Page to Le Roi, excited and looking for an English Adventure.
Etienne – Le Roi’s Guard, notoriously devoted to Le Roi.
Pirate Crew
Captain Cutthroat Kelley – Beloved captain of the pirate ship, clever & sly.
Blackspot Jennie – Good with a smile and a sword.
Black Johnny Stew – Black and crispy is his cuisine, famous for bad jokes.
Iron Hand Jake – Escaped Spanish prisoner, has a talent for telling tall tales.
Powderkeg Flint – Has nasty temper, has been gunner for several years.
Scuttlebutt Billy – A little mercenary, very expressive for a mute.
Our story
Scene 1 – Opening Gate (Front Gate)
| The Lord Mayor and his wife greet the crowd. | |
| Le Roi d’France arrives to propose marriage to Elizabeth. He brings with him a gift to present the Queen, traditional engagement heirloom. | |
| The Queen arrives and welcomes Le Roi d’France. | |
| His gift is brought in and ‘presented’ to the crowd. | |
| Privateers attempt to steal the jewels and are rebuffed by the Queen’s men |
Scene 2 – The First Proposal (The Dueling Space)
| Lettice Knollys brings the pirates greetings from the Queen and chides him for not being able to ‘secure’ the jewels on the first attempt. | |
| Le Roi d’France arrives, finding Lettice with the pirates he proceeds to ‘rescue’ her. | |
| The Queen arrives escorted by Robert Dudley accompanied by the rest of her court. | |
| Le Roi attempts to propose to Elizabeth, presenting his gift yet one more time. | |
| The proposal is interrupted by the pirates again attempting to steal the necklace. They are successful this time. | |
| The Queen is ‘overcome’ by the excitement and takes her leave accompanied by Dudley. | |
| Le Roi d’France is left to declare that he will recover his jewels and marry the Queen. |
Scene 3 – The Dance of the Pearls (The Dueling Space)
| At the beginning of the scene the pirates have the pearls. | |
| Lettice Knollys arrives and they are handed over to her. | |
| Raleigh, Drake and Hawkins show up to rescue Lettice. "The Queen says there is to be no blood shed here today." They take the pearls for safekeeping. | |
| Scuttlebutt Billy sneaks in and steals the pearls. | |
| One of the pirates comes to protect Billy and in the process takes the pearls from him. They hold up the pearls to taunt the Queen’s men and the fight is on. | |
| The fight ends with the pirates fleeing and the pearls in the hands of Queen’s men. | |
| Lettice thanks them for saving her and in the process secretly helps herself to the pearls. |
Scene 4 – The Final Joust (Shadowgate Downs)
| Le Roi d’France is determined to propose to the Queen and woe to anyone who tries to stop him. | |
| He presents the pearls himself. When he opens the box, the necklace is gone. | |
| The Queen’s gentlemen assure him that they have the necklace, however it is gone. | |
| Le Roi demands that Drake is arrested on the spot. | |
| The Queen proposes a joust to determine the fate of their impending engagement. | |
| England wins, Le Roi d’France leaves in a high huff. | |
| The Queen chides the Gentleman of the Court for loosing the pearls for her. | |
| Lettice inquires what would the Queen give her if she were to retrieve the pearls. | |
| Lettice presents the pearls which she has hidden on her person and asks for the hand of the Queen’s champion in marriage. |
